SPECTROSCOPY OF SUPERDEFORMED Pb ISOTOPES

چکیده
In the mass region around A = 190 about 70 superdeformed (SD) rotational bands are known in 25 different nuclei [1]. In many cases several bands have been found which are built on excited states in the SD potential energy minimum. The nature of these excitations has been the subject of experimental and theoretical investigations in recent years. In the odd-even and odd-odd nuclei it seems clear that the low-lying states are quasiparticle excitations. However, in the even-even isotopes the nature of the excited SD bands in this mass region is less clear. In almoust all cases configuration assignments are difficult since the bands are not linked to lower-lying known states. With the large highly-efficient γ-ray coincidence spectrometers GAMMASPHERE [2] and EUROBALL [3], it is possible to perform a detailed spectroscopy of SD nuclei and to collect sufficient experimental evidence to make reliable configuration assignments. In this contribution, two such investigations of Pb isotopes are selected as examples, the odd-A nucleus 193Pb [4] and the even-even nucleus 196Pb [5]. In 193Pb a total of nine

Excitation energies of superdeformed States in 196Pb: towards a systematic study of the second well in Pb isotopes.
The excitation energy of the lowest-energy superdeformed band in 196Pb is established using the techniques of time-correlated gamma-ray spectroscopy. Together with previous measurements on 192Pb and 194Pb, this result allows superdeformed excitation energies, binding energies, and two-proton and two-neutron separation energies to be studied systematically, providing stringent tests for current ...

The interacting boson model is extended to describe the spectroscopy of superdeformed bands. Microscopic structure of the model in the second minimum is discussed and superdeformed bosons are introduced as the new building blocks. Solutions of a quadrupole Hamiltonian are implemented through the 1/N expansion method. Effects of the quadrupole parameters on dynamic moment of inertia and electric...

متن کاملDirect decays from superdeformed states in 192Pb observed using time-correlated gamma-ray spectroscopy.
Correlations of decays above and below isomeric states in the normally deformed minimum of 192Pb have been used to identify discrete transitions in the decay of the superdeformed (SD) band. The data establish the absolute excitation energy of the lowest observed SD level as 4.425 MeV. Extrapolation to the bandhead indicates that the excitation energy of the superdeformed well in 192Pb is 0.5 Me...

Constrained Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) calculations have been carried out to estimate excitation energies relative to the ground state for superdeformed bands in the mass regions A ∼ 190 and A ∼ 150. It is shown that RMF theory is able to successfully reproduce the recently measured superdeformed minima in Hg and Pb nuclei. Superdeformation has become the recent years one of the most interes...
